Is Warehousing in India Morphing for the Future?

The online shopping industry of India is at an all-time high and one of the major contributing factors is surely the convenience it comes with. One places an order sitting or lying down comfortably at home and the same is delivered to his or her doorstep. Has it ever occurred to you as to how these e-commerce retailers are able to deliver goods with such ease and precision? Though there are many reasons for this, one of the premier factors for seamless pickup and despatch of goods are warehouses. That is the main factor behind the rapid growth in the number of warehouse spaces in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other big business cities of the country.

In the last quarter of a decade, the warehouses of India have seen drastic and revolutionary changes. From being mere bricks and mortar with the sole purpose of storing goods, they have developed into highly sophisticated stockrooms, where, with the help of technology, it is possible to track the products and goods on a real-time basis, just at the click of a button. One can say that in the absence of these state-of-the-art warehouses, it would be next to impossible for online shopping giants to provide even half the service that they are providing right now. This isn’t true for just e-commerce but for almost all the industries that deal with physical goods. Especially for the manufacturing industry, where lean manufacturing has become a rule, some very significant parts of the job like labeling and packaging are being outsourced from third party logistical or warehouse facility providers. With such a huge rush coming it is way, it is natural for the warehousing sector to turn to technology for a helping hand.

With the economy of India undergoing an overhauling and morphing process, the need for technically sophisticated logistical and warehousing support systems is going to go through the roof. This demand is pinned to be so huge that the average size of warehouses in the country is expected to go from around 20,000 sq. ft. to 2-3 lakh sq. ft. in a few years. If the current trends are telling a story, the warehousing space in India is set to go from the current 909.5 million sq. ft. to about 1,439 million sq. ft. by the end of 2019.

All this means that the warehouse sector of India is potentially a great field and more and bigger players are set to enter the market. Market experts envisage investments of up to Rs.15,000 crore annually to meet the requirements of all industry verticals. Particularly with better infrastructure, efficient use of technology and brilliant initiatives like “Make in India”, the warehousing industry is set to play a huge role in the growth of the morphing economy of the country and more and more signs of “warehouse for lease” are expected to go up in the sky.
